Donald Trump caused a bizarre moment after the Club World Cup final: During the awards ceremony, the US president simply refused to leave the podium. The Chelsea FC players were irritated, one even "scared his pants."
Spain's European football champion Marc Cucurella was extremely nervous on stage at the Club World Cup awards ceremony after Chelsea's victory – because of US President Donald Trump. "We were told, as a rule, almost: 'He's going to come and present you with the trophy, and you're not allowed to lift it until he's gone,'" he told Spanish journalist Gerard Romero.
"And of course, we were all standing there waiting for him to leave, but the guy just wouldn't leave. And we looked at him, and he said, 'No, go ahead and pick her up, I'm staying here,'" reported the professional, who has become well-known in Germany since the European Championship semifinal and the handball penalty that was disallowed. "Who would say anything against that, you know? I was scared shitless."
When Romero jokingly asked him if he would have been escorted out or kicked out, Cucurella replied, "Yes, or you'd get sniped right there." Several snipers were stationed in the stadium during the US President's visit.
After handing the trophy to Chelsea captain Reece James, Trump, contrary to usual procedure, remained off the stage and stood among the players—after James asked the president, "Are you leaving?" National team player Cole Palmer later explained: "I knew he was going to be there, but I didn't know he was going to be on the podium when we lifted the trophy. So I was a little confused..." Chelsea beat Paris Saint-Germain 3-0 in the final of the inaugural Club World Cup.
